Thursday, More Music By Xavier Rudd

G’day dear friends and readers, I’m still bristling and bubbling from Xavier Rudd’s concert last Saturday night, and on this Thursday, another day of Ivor being an old plumber at work, the attached song seems both inspiring and appropriate for me this week. Please enjoy his music and lyrics.

Xavier Rudd Lyrics

“Growth Lines”

All the reasons once again escaped his mind
The sting of daylight through the blinds
And he could smell her on the drapes by the phone
She left it ringing for so longAnd I believe we are done
And I agree we had fun
We can hold our heads high
‘Cause we could only try
Yeah, we came so far
And we gave it our all
We can walk with pride
TonightBound by the stories of the growth lines on their hands
A fork in the road would someday come
And said I love you to the moon and back
Used to seem so damn far

And I believe we are done
And I agree we had fun
We can hold our heads high
‘Cause we could only try
Yeah, we came so far
And we gave it our all
We can walk with pride
Tonight

Floating in the ocean
Heart beating like a drum
I’m singing Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen
And I’m floating in the ocean
Heart beating like a drum
Singing Hallelujah into the setting sun

Saturday Night “Live” Concert

I was fortunate enough to go see Xavier Rudd, live in concert last night, as part of his Storm Boy Tour of Australia, and he was here in Geelong, and what an incredible show he put on, in front of a pack house in his hometown. He’s a rare talent, playing multiple instruments, including the Aboriginal Didgeridoo and “Lioness Eye” is a good example of him playing the didgeridoo. Click this link >>  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZk-EhCevm0   Attached below is a few of his songs that he performed last night. I did try taking some video clips, but they were very poor attempts I’m afraid, Yes, Ivor should stick to trying to write poetry.

And of course there’s no Xavier Rudd show/concert, without listening to his classic song, “Spirit Bird”, I’ll post this version so you’re able to follow his lyrics, a heartfelt message of important significance for all walks life of our world.

“Spirit Bird she creaks and groans

She knows she has

Seen this all before she has

Seen this all before she has”

I hope you enjoy his music as much as I do.

Day 2, I’m nominating, Jane

Day 3 of my “Three-day Lyrical Challenge”, and for all of my readers that know me well, it was always going to be about Leonard Cohen, whom I unashamedly admit has been the biggest influence on my life. He has been with me since I was a teenager, his music, poetry, books and philosophies, have been my constant companion throughout all of the undulations during my life’s journey. For me to choose one special song is a difficult task, but I shall pick an older tune, that I played often during my days/months/years recovering from a stroke, at a time, I could barely read or write properly. Life was tough, and there were moments of “Do I want to go on”, and Leonard was there in my darkest hours, my saviour. Now to that all important song, “Sisters Of Mercy”, and when you read the lyrics, you might understand the significance of the song, during my time of both physical and mental healing. I’ve also added a footnote with some further information …

Sisters Of Mercy, Lyrics

O the sisters of mercy they are not
Departed or gone,
They were waiting for me when I thought
That I just can’t go on,
And they brought me their comfort
And later they brought me this song.
O I hope you run into them
You who’ve been traveling so long.Yes, you who must leave everything
That you cannot control;
It begins with your family,
But soon it comes round to your soul.
Well, I’ve been where you’re hanging
I think I can see how you’re pinned.
When you’re not feeling holy,
Your loneliness says that you’ve sinned.

Well they lay down beside me
I made my confession to them.
They touched both my eyes
And I touched the dew on their hem.
If your life is a leaf
That the seasons tear off and condemn
They will bind you with love
That is graceful and green as a stem.

When I left they were sleeping,
I hope you run into them soon.
Don’t turn on the light
You can read their address by the moon;
And you won’t make me jealous
If I hear that they sweeten your night
We weren’t lovers like that
And besides it would still be all right
We weren’t lovers like that
And besides it would still be all right.

Footnote.

“It is a mysterious process, it involves perseverance and perspiration and sometimes, by some grace, something stands out and invites you to elaborate or animate it. These are sacred mechanics and you have to be careful analysing them as you would never write a line again. If you looked too deeply into the process you’d end up in a state of paralysis.” –Leonard Cohen, about the process of writing.

Though Cohen would produce dark, funereal imagery at will, all his work is undercut with a wry and playful sense of humour.

Day 2, I’m nominating,  Claudia

Today I’m presenting a band that might be new to most of my readers, however they have been going for a while. The dø is a French/Finnish indie pop band founded in Paris in 2005. The band is composed of Olivia Merilahti and Dan Levy. I find Olivia Merilathi’s voice unusually captivating. In this video we are getting two songs for the price of one, the first song is, Despair Hangover & Ecstasy, the lyrics are below, and the second song is called, Miracles, and the lyrics are also below.

The Do Lyrics

“Despair, Hangover & Ecstasy”

We’re breaking promises we thought we could keep
We trigger avalanches unknowingly
We travel in and out, we take off, we land
We live in airports like we don’t have a plan
This is a journey and we call it home,
And when it stops we’re feeling miserable, wellWe’re breaking promises we thought we could keep
We trigger hurricanes unwillingly
It’s our fault
When it all
Breaks into everyone’s lives
But are we really to blame? It’s like a pain in the chest
Despair, Hangover and Ecstasy
So many people around
We disappoint and let down
And though we’re trying our best
Despair, Hangover and Ecstasy
Despair, Hangover and EcstasyWe’re breaking promises we thought we could keep
We trigger avalanches unknowingly, oh
We’re not so different from convicts on the run
Freedom could kill us, but we’d rather go on
This is a journey and we wanna go far
They say we’re selfish but this plane is on fireWe’re breaking promises we wanted to keep
We trigger hurricanes unwillingly
It’s our fault
When it all
Breaks into everyone’s lives
Still we would do it againIt’s like a pain in the chest
Despair, Hangover and Ecstasy
So many people around
We disappoint and let down
And though we’re trying our best
Despair, Hangover and Ecstasy
Despair, Hangover and EcstasyLike a pain in the chest
Despair, Hangover and Ecstasy
So many people around
We disappoint and let down
And though we’re trying our best
Despair, Hangover and Ecstasy
Our only mission, our destiny

The Do Lyrics

“Miracles (Back In Time)”

Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna, really wanna go?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back?I still have some pictures on my wall
I still know the places where they’re from
I still find all answers in my dreams
I still feel the gum under my shoeHow about holding a palm full of miracles
How about building a house on the moon

Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back?

I still care about you being well
I still wonder how we conquered hell
I still love this nonsense team we make
I still think we’re twisted both the same

How about holding a palm full of miracles
How about building a house on the moon

Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna, really wanna go?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna go back in time?
Do you really wanna, really wanna go?
Do you really wanna go back in time?

I’m going to see Xavier Rudd live in concert next Saturday night, 25th August, here in Geelong, so it’s fitting that I should present one of his songs and lyrics. His lyrics are superb, please take the time to give them a read while you listen to his beautiful song.

Xavier Rudd – Storm Boy Lyrics

Artist: Xavier Rudd

Album: Storm Boy

When will you learn that the more that you take
Means the less that you have at the end of the day
Stillness of the mind is so hard to embrace
Freedom of the heart is what we crave
And we sit by the river with a cup of tea
Watch the movement of the tide in the gentle breeze
Pelican drifting slowly looking for a feed
Like Mr Percival the storm boy, you to me
Kookaburra calls just like he knows
And I call right back “Yes I’m home”
He’s been with me
He’s watched me grow
Through those rainy days and those rocky roads

And now everybody smiles in the setting sun
And smiles with contentment when the day is done
Hand in hand
With the one you love
Feeling blessed by the magic of the moon above
And we sing
Sha la la la la
We’re just living in this beautiful world
Sha la la la la
We’re just living in this beautiful world

It’s time for fire
Smoke and leaves
The only mosquito repellent we need
Pay respect to the North the South the West and the East
Pay respect to the spirit of this whole country
Freedom in the hearts of the young and brave
Who know little of the journey of the diggers who gave
Their lives to the service and the government gains
So that we could dance together on this beautiful day

And now everybody smiles in the setting sun
And smiles with contentment when the day is done
Hand in hand
With the one you love
Feeling blessed by the magic of the moon above
And we sing
Sha la la la la
We’re just living in this beautiful world
Sha la la la la
We’re just living in this beautiful world

Ohh
Ohh
Aye
Now the winter seeps into my bones
And I hear the call from the North
Yeah I will go
Yeah I will go

And now everybody smiles in the setting sun
And smiles with contentment when the day is done
Hand in hand
With the one you love
Feeling blessed by the magic of the moon above
And we sing
Sha la la la la
We’re just living in this beautiful world
Sha la la la la
We’re just living in this beautiful world

Saturday Night Bedtime Music

It’s Saturday evening here at Tullawalla in Geelong, I’m going to bed soon, to do some reading, and listen to my music, and some quiet bush rhythm music from Oka. Then next, as I’m getting into bed, to be “Safe & Sound” a beautiful piece from composer William Joseph.

Goodnight, sweet dreams.

Featured picture: That’s my temporary little computer, the small black box on the left.

Tonight’s Bedtime Song

I’m tired tonight, my plumber’s back is aching, my poet’s pen is dry, my heart is yearning, my mind is thinking of peace, and my soul is singing the same old tune. I hope you like this song, and the lyrics by Nick Cave are worth a read.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Lyrics

“Hallelujah”

On the first day of May I took to the road
I’d been staring out the window most of the morning
I’d watched the rain claw at the glass
And a vicious wind blew hard and fast
I should have taken it as a warning
As a warning As a warning
As a warning

I’d given my nurse the weekend off
My meals were ill prepared
My typewriter had turned mute as a tomb
And my piano crouched in the corner of my room
With all its teeth bared
All its teeth bared All its teeth bared
All its teeth bared.

Hallelujah Hallelujah
Hallelujah Hallelujah

I left my house without my coat
Something my nurse would not have allowed
And I took the small roads out of town
And I passed a cow and the cow was brown
And my pyjamas clung to me like a shroud
Like a shroud Like a shroud
Like a shroud

There rose before me a little house
With all hope and dreams kept within
A woman’s voice close to my ear
Said, “Why don’t you come in here?”
“You looked soaked to the skin”
Soaked to the skin Soaked to the skin
Soaked to the skin

Hallelujah Hallelujah
Hallelujah Hallelujah

I turned to the woman and the woman was young
I extended a hearty salutation
But I knew if my nurse had been here
She would never in a thousand years
Permit me to accept that invitation
Invitation That invitation
That invitation

Now, you might think it wise to risk it all
Throw caution to the reckless wind
But with her hot cocoa and her medication
My nurse had been my one salvation
So I turned back home
I turned back home I turned back home
Singing my song

Hallelujah
The tears are welling in my eyes again
Hallelujah
I need twenty big buckets to catch them in
Hallelujah
And twenty pretty girls to carry
them down
Hallelujah
And twenty deep holes to bury them in
Hallelujah
The tears are welling in my eyes again
Hallelujah
I need twenty big buckets to catch them in
Hallelujah
And twenty pretty girls to carry them down
Hallelujah
And twenty deep holes to bury them in

The Dark Streets

I’ve been listening to The Waterboys songs lately, their lyrics are meaningful and their music is always dramatic. In this following piece of mine I’ve used 18 of their song Titles as the foundation for my poem. To other Waterboys fans who read this post, I hope my words have done The Waterboys the justice they deserve, by all their glorious songs. For those readers, and me, who are struggling with the italics and too many capital letters, below at the bottom of the post, is an easy reading version.

The combined Trumpets of the world are sounding

Being carried on today’s Lonesome Old Wind

Resonating loudly for The Stolen Child

And Choirs are singing The Faery’s Last Song

Where did their promise go, and there’s no Sweet Thing in sight

Will the children get to view The Whole Of The Moon again

When will they ever cry out, “This Is The Sea”

Searching for their parents, crying “Where Are You Now When I Need You”

Children crawling Down Through The Dark Streets

Cowering under black clouds and Purple Rain

In A Pagan Place, created by governments

Shamefully they have Let It Happen

Our leaders need a wake-up call And A Bang On The Ear

When will they tell us “The Healing Has Begun”

We Will Not Be Lovers anymore, until

They declare to the last refugee girl, “She Is So Beautiful”

Let us hope the children suffer no Red Army Blues

And need not worry about being Too Close To Heaven

A big thank you to my friend Chris Black of, A way with words. for inspiring me to write another one these poems using song titles, the last one I wrote was on December 2nd 2017.  https://ivors20.wordpress.com/2017/12/02/where-have-all-the-good-times-gone-2/

The Waterboys Lyrics

“Down Through The Dark Streets”

Down by old house
Over the bridge
Down through the dark streets
Where we used to live
Out by the cornfield
And the sycamore trees
Down to the water
Will you come, Lassie please?Snow in the town square
December afternoon
Christmas lights
A crescent moon
A boy selling chestnuts
Roasted and brown
Dropping black cinders
That hiss on the ground
You and I stand like strangers
In our Hokusai clothes
Like we come from some strange country
That nobody else knows
And to go where the wind blows
Are just the words of thieves
So will you come with me, Lassie
Will you come Lassie, please? There’s a place there by the river
I never showed you before
But when I’m far away
That’s where I go
Outside it’s lamplight
High time we leave
Winter-a-borning
Will you come Lassie, please? The big blue sea between us
Is thousands of miles
It’s cruel I know
But you just have to smile
I’d be back for you
If I could just believe
That everything is right and pure
That everything is right and pure
That everything is right and pure
Will you come, Lassie, please?

Music, By Xavier Rudd

I’m sitting at home this morning listening to the music of Xavier Rudd, and I’ll post two of songs with the lyrics below. Enjoy his words and his music, he’s an outstanding artist from my local area here, Geelong. Oh, yes, dear readers, the Plumber is going to work soon.

Xavier Rudd Lyrics

“Home”

Streets full of people
With trinkets to share
Offering them up for folks in despair
Yandi and crystals and oils for growth
Of spirit and body and mind as we go

Emphasis placed on the body and mind
The heart os often somewhere behind
Strange

Tiny little bones of the innocent child
Lookin’ up at me with the saddest of eyes
Is her innocence in tact?
Or has it been stained?
Has the creature that feeds her taken it away
Strange
So sad it’s strange

I recognize my health
Things I have been dealt
Places that I have roamed
Feelings I’ve had
Things that I know

Home, my home
Home, my home
Home, I’m home

Running through the bush
And all of the trees
Moving in time with my capable speed
Skippy ants claw
At the edge of the bowl
Of the shell of an egg
Of bird long since gone
Maybe it rose up
To spread it’s new wings
Or maybe it nourished
A stronger sibling
Strange

Places we roam
And people we meet
Some connections are strong
And some of them are weak
1 or 2 or 3 or 4
Or maybe 5 or 6 or more
Strong as the roots
Of a big old gum tree
And we’ll carry them through
To the next life we see
Strange
So beautifully strange

Recognize my health
Things that i have been dealt
Places that i have roamed
Feelings i’ve had
Things that i know

Home, my home
Home, my home
Home, i’m home

Xavier Rudd Lyrics

“Creating A Dream”

Imagine every whale was free to roam
Imagine if the trees could tell us where to go
Imagine that the sun could fill each lonely heart
Imagine confrontation never got a start

Imagine things were always crystal clear
Imagine if the mind never interfered
Imagine we could fly with broken wings
Imagine if the heart could shed its skin

Please patience please, patience please
I’m creating a dream
Please patience please, patience please
I’m creating a dream

Imagine sacred sites were left to be
Imagine if true activists controlled TV
Imagine Captain Watson had the final say
Imagine if industry just had to obey

Please patience please, patience please
I’m creating a dream
Please patience please, patience please
I’m creating a dream
Please patience please, patience please
I’m creating a dream

.
And there’s no Xavier Rudd music without listening to his magnificent classic “Spirit Bird”
