What a dull way
To start a poem
“Looking through a window”
I was told by my teacher
If he saw a poem
Beginning with that line
He wouldn’t read the verse
Saying the words were over used
But in all honesty
Here I am
Sitting at my desk
“Looking through a window”
And the sky is a gloomy gray
So what else could I say
About this lonesome day
Another one of solitary downplay
Waiting patiently for a new entree
Writing this empty essay
Listening to the rains crescendo
“Looking through a window”

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer.
I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

There’s beauty and joy in simple, mundane things too 😊

Yes I had a special teacher for English Expression (Marg Morris), I was terrible at English,.. anyhow she gave private tutoring at lunchtimes, and I passed… because of extra interest in me… she understood my little disability.. 😊😉

the former American Poet Laureate wrote a number of brilliant poems in this mode; he is well worth a look to see what can be done with such mundane beginnings [ many are now online]

Your teacher would have missed out on this beautiful poem if he didn’t read after the first line…I love looking out windows – and in them!

Yes, it’s usually where my day starts, opening up the blinds, and looking through the window… 😊😎💛🌏

OhMyGosh! What was wrong with your teacher?!?!
I think that is a wonderful way to start a poem and you proved it, Ivor! 🙂
And I think looking through windows is a joy! I love doing that…especially on a cold or rainy or stay-in day! Just letting nature “in” via open curtains and a look out can be so joyful and can keep us company! 🙂
My teacher Mrs. Huizinga told me I was verbose! In my speaking AND in my writing! Can you imagine that!?!?! 😉 😛 Well, Mrs. H., I am STILL verbose!!! 😀
(((HUGS))) 🙂
PS…Just thought of this song…

You could have taught your teacher a thing or two about both life and poetry

I believe “Looking through a window”, is an excellent start to a poem. I would be curious as to what there is to see. Stay safe and stay well, Ivor. 🧡 💛 💚

Great poem…I would not have thought the phrase over-used. Proves we can’t accept just anything a critic tells us 🙂
