Last evening I attended a poetry open mic’ event, held by ‘lowercase poetry’. The word theme for night was “A Shadow Of Doubt”. I was invited on stage to read my poem called ‘Finality”, a copy of which I’ve attached here below my Haiku, ‘Recital
Haiku:
Recital
The voiceless man spoke
An old poet recited
His words clear and strong
Finality (Revised)
We will all travel, life’s journey
There’s reality in the end, a concluding count down
Finality occurs, not a shadow of doubt
Sooner or later, we have to retire, and work no more
Old tools are laid to rest, gathering dust
There’s a time, when we have to say goodbye
To that special one’s, sad crying eyes
Suddenly life propels us, to pass our friends lives
The people we knew, dwindle to a few
And beyond the lies, earth slowly dies
We the custodians, failed to see overcast skies
Our belief’s shriveled, inside religious sleeves
The jealous and greedy, are yet to eat their last supper
I hope tomorrow’s future, is better than today’s veiled ways
And yesterday’s trials, become the healing castle’s final say
Ivor Steven (c) 2019

Really delightful poem Ivor, glad you got to share it so publicly … I haven’t tried an open mike night yet but it’s on my to do list 🙂
Can you give me any clues please?

To prepare myself, I read aloud to myself in the mirror, 2 times a day for a few days before the night. I think is the best way to go. The lady I was sitting with, recited her poem verbatim, she was very impressive, but she was the only one who recited a poem without reading from notes.

most relieved to hear others are reading too, I’ve written too many to do it verbatim … thanks Ivor 🙂

A great learning curve and confidence booster, for me and my trip. Lots of people interaction, a crowd to navigate, a dimly lit night club to walk around in, and I seemed to cope well, and I was happy with how managed the whole evening. 🌃🌃☺️😊❤️💙

Beautiful observations, Ivor..& sadly, isn’t it always the way that “the jealous and greedy, are yet to eat their last supper”! I’m glad you enjoyed your recital, it’s a lovely way for folks to hear your poetry exactly as you intended. I did my first one a couple of weeks ago, & was able to read 4 altogether. I was nervous, as I’d never read any in public before, but I think my previous theatre experience helped. I couldn’t have recited them from memory, though. Hope you do lots more & especially enjoy reciting them to your family in NYC!

Thank you Debbie, and yes it was daunting for me. I’d previously done some before. but that was before these stroke things I’ve suffered. My speach was originally affected, let alone my right side difficulties… Any how I coped well on the night, haha… except for getting on and off the stage, they only had a milk crate as a make-shift step up onto the stage… some pretty girls had to come a give me assistance !!

Aww, it wasn’t all bad then, haha! 😁 I’m guessing all you’ve been through has knocked your confidence, big time, so well done, Ivor..sounds like another triumph!

Yes Debbie, and good bit training of training for handling myself in a dimly lit nightclub, and enjoyed the social interaction as well….

Oh, oh oH! 🙂 You know I’m so thrilled about you sharing your poems with others and in your own voice! I’m so proud of you! I bet your contagious smile and friendly-twinkly eyes captured the group right in and then I’m sure they loved hearing your poems!
HUGS!!! 🙂
