Tea Leaf’s (Revised)
It’s early morn, time to break away
From last night’s, dream-time soiree
But first, I must make my bed
“Yes, just like Mum said”
Oh, I gratefully do remember
As I straighten the quilt cover
And I like to fluff-up my pillows
Ready for an evening’s bout, with stupid cupid’s arrows
I’ve a long, storage bedhead shelf
However I’m smiling, satisfied within myself
It’s always untidy and in disarray
And last nights scribbles are all on display
I gather up this multitude of loose words
The mess of my midnight songbirds
Snippets of my subconscious memories
Pieces of forgotten wistful dreams
And I begin to decode my jumbled site
Then emotionally, I start to rewrite
About the tea-leaf’s, floating on a calm sea
Forming love letters, from her to me
Ivor Steven (c) Nov 2019

“I start to rewrite
About the tea-leaf’s, floating on a calm sea
Forming love letters, from her to me”
Romanticism at its best, Ivor.

I loved the bit about the “midnight songbirds.” So beautiful. I find that when I can’t sleep at night my brain is racing around and around. Sometimes it’s memories, others worries and fears. But I often have trouble sleeping so I’ll have to remember to think of the midnight songbirds. You really have a way with words!

Oh Rose, you really know make an old romantic smile… thank you for kind words…. and yes when I’ve trouble sleeping, I get out of bed, put my track suit on, turn on Leonard Cohen, (my computer and in my music is in bed), relax for a while, when I start to feel sleepy again, I go but to bed, and most of the time I get to sleep…. Because I was a carer of my wife for 30 years, I lived on very little sleep for all of those years, I had to seek professional help to get my sleeping patterns back to normal…. and the main tactic was to break the routine of that restless sleep…. I’m doing these changes, and it’s gradually been improving for me, especially the last 2 years, where I’ve gone from 3 – 4 hrs a night, to now having 6 – 7 hrs a night…. maybe it’ll help for you Rose xxx

I’m glad I could make you smile. 😁 That sounds like a good way to get yourself back to sleepy-land. A nice easy, breezy approach. Usually I watch the clock and get more anxious as my mind runs in circles of darkness and thorns.
Those of us who care for others in one way or another (Even as a child I would wake at night to care for my younger siblings and get them soothed and back to sleep) tend to run on less sleep for sure. But for a good reason at least…to start, anyway. Thank you for the suggestions. I am glad it’s helping you as well . ☺️

Sometimes when they shouldn’t (for me it’s during the night), our brains kick into high gear…often with negative-stuff…at those times it’s best to listen to music, recall happy memories, write a poem… Coop and I have even gotten up and taken a walk and communed with the moon. 🙂
Your poem is lovely and romantic, Ivor! Great vivid word-pics to see and emotions to feel!
I have a pad of paper and a pen by my bed so I can write down phrases that come to mind in the night or a few words to remind of a dream I had, etc. 🙂 Often those words become poems or short-stories. 🙂
HUGS!!! 🙂
PS…Love the pooch on the bed! 🙂 Is that Cyndi or another 4-legged friend?! 😀

Wow, Carolyn you’re doing everything exactly what I do at night when I have one those restless sleeps.. And the tactics are perfectly the right stuff(I had professional help) , and then when you feel that tiredness is approaching and then slip back into bed
Oh, the little dog, was my girl Lily, Coop’s would have love her…. She was originally Carole’s lap dog and dear friend… 🐶🐶🐶 xxx

I didn’t think that looked like Cyndi.
Aw, Lily was a cutie! 🙂
Yes, I follow my body/mind’s lead and I can’t just lay there restless, I have to find something to “do” until the sleep comes. 🙂

I love this one Ivor, and your very busy bedroom. My brain goes into overdrive when I cant sleep, but force myself to stay put until I fall asleep again. 🙂

Yes Sue, we go into overdrive…. for me it was a huge problem, after living on 3 hours sleep a night for the 30 years of being a carer for Carole..
Get back to some sort normal sleeping pattern was a huge task, but with professional help, I am now “almost” normal…. …xx

If you asked my wife I’m sure she would say that I have never been ‘almost normal.’!

I didn’t miss it, Ivor! Thought I had commented. WP is acting up over here – not letting me like or comment on many posts. Argh. I was especially chuffed by this entry.
