We continue to live, under this smokey haze
As the brave firefighters, continue to fight day after day
I’m in a stunned daze, leaning here on my table
Knowing there’s thousands of burnt homes and stables
Feeling for the animals, perished and disabled
Crying for our native fauna, of fame and fable
From the ashes, our world will revive
Beyond the rain-clouds, busy bees will rebuild our hives
Green saplings will replace the trees blackened towers
And underground seeds will grow into our earth’s new flowers

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer.
I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

Ivor, both your poem and the song/tribute brought tears to my eyes – gosh, the devastation. I love how your poem ends with hope, and the knowledge that nature will flourish through the smoke and ashes. Hugs to you 💛

Yes RacheI, I was hoping for my poem to be nearly as powerful and emotional as the song/video ….xx

Thank you Rachel, I’m winding down at the moment, a beer, and BBQ. I’ve emotionally worn myself out, with 5 days of intensely, giving my writings every piece of my smouldering heart

You know, I’m very very happy you are having a bbq and a beer, so quintessentially Australian (and kiwi). Cheers to that, Ivor, from across the ditch. Enjoy, and repair your smouldering heart xx

The poem and song made me so sad, pity people have not pushed the govt harder before this happened. Devasting to see the horrors of it all and I bet parlimentarian members as per usual sat behind their desk not really doing much to help except to pontificate. Many of the firefighters are volunteers they have stopped working to help rescue the country this is what Australia has been built on. Take care Ivor

Yes Nanette, the powerful and emotional video/song, was a piece that strongly suited my poem

I am feeling your emotions but you are living it, devasting and as much as we can protest I bless and appreciate the men who risk their lives to dowsing the fires. Oh why Oh why did the people not move out sooner, tragic for them but the have added to making things worse by clogging up the roads. Enjoy your BBQ you spreading the word tiring.

Thank you Nanette, I warmly appreciate your kindness… The firefighting teams, nurses, vets, army, navy and the tireless coordinators are all our communities heroes, and even the kryptonite didn’t slow down their superhuman efforts 🌏🌏👏👏

A very moving tribute Ivor. I’m amazed how the animals, despite being let down so tragically by we humans, still trust us to help them.

Probably now the worst animal catastrophe of modern times, it’s now estimated, the number of native, marsupials, reptiles and birds perished is
1.2 BILLION

Ivor, this is truly a touching piece. I have a question for you… How close are you to this enormous blaze? Are they talking ablout evacuations around your area?

I’m fine Beckie, Geelong is a big place,.. The main fires are in East of Victoria, we are South-west Victoria 300 miles from fires… But plenty of smoke…. The fires are horrendously vast though. Last they estimated that the number of native animals, marsupials, reptiles and birds perished is a staggering….
1.2 BILLION !! 🌏💙🔥🔥

OMG! That is the most awful thing to hear.
I was watching the Weather Channel last night and they were showing people trying to get in there and save as many animals as possible. I was in tears when I was watching it.
My prayers go out to you and all the people and wildlife down there. 🙏💛🦘🐨🦜 🐍 🦎

My pleasure Ivor. I can imagine how hard it is. I know you guys are resilient and courageous. You will rebuilt. However this horrifying Australian story is part of a larger problem that we all have to face. Climate change is real. We all will suffer if we don’t move fast.
One flower and a beautiful thought for you 🌸

I was thinking today of all that has been lost…precious lives, precious animals, precious land, precious homes and I started weeping.
Know that you are not alone in spirit. The world is with you in spirit, care, and prayers.
You are right, nature will heal itself and begin again…and we must find hope and promise in that.
(((HUGS)))
