Pockets Full of Gravel

I’ve walked a long rough road

Granted to me by His hard gavel

A path of highs and lows

Never smooth nor level

Knees were bruised and cut

By slippery tracks of coarse gravel

Tripping over old shoelaces

Untidy and unravelled

Life has been lost and found

During my perpetual travels

But I’ll continue to follow my star

And keep riding the wise man’s camel

Vaka (Wake), Lyrics by Sigur Ros

You sigh low tonight
You’re so alone
You’re so
You sigh low tonight
You’re so alone
You’re so
You’re so low
You’re so alone
You’re so
You sigh low
You sigh low
You’re so
(you’re so)

you sigh low tonight
You’re so alone
You’re so
You sigh low tonight
You’re so alone
You’re so
You’re so low
You’re so alone
You’re so
You sigh low
You sigh low
You’re so

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  1. There will indeed be ups and downs throughout different paths and times in life. The most important thing to do is to keep moving. As long as you’re moving, you can get through this.

That’s what I love about this poem. It’s not afraid to be honest and the imagery is evocative to what one can experience in their own life. This is a beautiful piece and I really enjoyed reading it.

  2. Ivor, after reading this poem, I will always have an image in my mind of you riding on a camel! Just “joshing” you about that.

This is a lovely poem, filled with meaning. When you talk about the difficulties of life, most of us can relate, ever more so as we grow older. Thank you for “telling it like it is” and for showing us we can have the courage to live a good life in spite of difficulties.

Thank you for another beautiful post. Take care, Cheryl
