A Heartless Bastard

I’m watching the crowd strolling by

Masks are casually dangling like schoolboy ties

And now I see everyone’s smiling faces

Winners are grinners and free to go places

We endured lonely lockdowns and restriction dangers

Then successfully obeyed the rules of our Lone-Rangers

And bravely negotiated the low tides of dark seas

Today community happiness bows and greets me

The Covid bastard is drowning in our summer breeze

And together we have beaten a heartless disease

Heartless Bastards. Lyrics
“Skin And Bone”

Spent my time here as a child,
And now I’m passing through here and it’s all coming back again.
Dilapidated buildings down on Main.
This small town was crumbling down, it was hard for me to stay.

And, oh, I, I find after all this time,
I am back here filled with all these memories.
Bittersweet, my home skin and bone.
This rust has worn through tearing up beneath the seams.

Driving down Salem Avenue.
It’s all so familiar now, but so many things have changed.
And the rain came down all around.
Washed away the industry, washed it to the sea.

And, oh, I, I find after all this time,
I am back here filled with all these memories.
Bittersweet, my home skin and bone.
This rust has worn through tearing up beneath the seams.
And, oh, I want it to be like when I was young.
Oh, I want it to be like when I was young.

Ooh, ooh, ooh.

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  1. You really seem to have the bastard under control where you are – hope you are enjoying your freedom 😊 we had a restriction free summer then got bit in the behind, but hopefully now the vaccine is on the way that won’t happen again!

  2. Ivor, great poem! Congratulations on the triumph over the “heartless bastard!” ❀

In the US, people are so divided that they can't seem to work together. Many people refuse to wear masks or refrain from gatherings. They say covid19 is all a hoax, and not wearing a mask or following other guidelines is seen as a political statement. Almost every day we have a record number of new infections, hospitalizations, and deaths. I suppose the vaccine will eventually save us! πŸ™‚

    Happy Holidays, Ivor! ❀

    1. Waiting for the vaccine will hopefully help your basically self centred and selfish people.. but it seems a heartless way to solve the problem… relying on some magic cure, when the bastard could have been slowed down with a bit of self discipline…I suppose they couldn’t shoot it, or electrocute it, so it’s was all too hard for them…. whoops, sorry for being a bit harsh…. πŸ˜€πŸ˜Ž

Did you follow the lyrics of the “Heartless Bastards” song, they suited my poem so well…

      1. I’m glad there have been no cases reported and I hope it continues. It’s pretty safe outdoors without a mask, but indoors is a different story. The track and trace system here proved that virtually no cases stemmed from outdoor contacts, all were from socialising indoors.

At least you will now have a good worry free Christmas with your family. πŸ™‚πŸ·πŸ·
