Winter Rose

Today, here again I am presenting another ‘5min’ poem that I have written at one of Ali Grimsham’s ‘Writing Circle’ Zoom meetings that I attend on Monday’s, but sadly this was my 5th and final session with the group, and I would like to thank Ali for giving me an opportunity to participate in such a fantastic event … Here is the page link to get more information about the next “writing circle” event. https://flashlightbatteries.blog/online-writing-circles/ Tickets by donation. All are welcome.

Winter Rose

I am soundlessly staring

Out the frosty window

Looking at a sunny patch in the snow

Where a single winter rose grows

And here beside the fire flame

I warm my bare toes

I feel their numbness

That only my hand knows

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

    1. Thank you Ingrid, that’s so nice of you to say … metaphorically ‘roses’ offer a vast range of analogies/topics, .. colour, love, memories, life, etc,
      Red Rose Sunset

      Another sunrise
And my red rose has wilted
I knew she could not stay
      Although I sacredly
      Stood her in holy water
      Nurturing her fading life
      As I watched her weep
      Petals, one by one
      Weaken and fall
      Anointing her finality
      Leaving a barren stem
      Sturdy and alone
      Reciting eulogies
      About a lost Autumn flower
And that last, red rose sunset

      1. Oh.. I didn’t mean to do that… Haha, .. I was just sending you an example of a ‘rose’ in a poem … and how they seem to naturally evoke powerful emotions… 😀🌹

  1. Very nicely done Ivor. And the photo is great with the poem. I had some roses like that this past year that lasted till Thanksgiving and still looked good. Cold winter soon took a bite and they were gone!

  2. Beautiful trio of photo, poem, song, Ivor! 🙂
Roses, even just the thought of roses, bring warmth on a cold day…weather-wise or when we’re feeling cold physically or emotionally.
