The Wednesday Challenge on Weekly Prompts is the word:Β Retirement. Please go over and visit their fabulous site by clicking >> HERE . Although my poem below doesn’t mention ‘Retirement’ directly, I think my words may be read as a poem about living in later years of retirement…
A Box of Old Crayons
Sometimes I stared at an empty table
And wondered if I would ever be able
To turn the fading power back on
I was unsure about another swansong
But each time I became lost and wrong
I found another box of old crayons
And from here and there words did flow
Nurturing my dry mirages to regrow
Replenished by the thawing mountain snow
Natureβs river rejoined my oceanβs undertow
Again duplicating my life of highs and lows
Ivor Steven (c) March 2021

I sense much more than an old box of crayons is being discussed here Ivor…

Your sense of detection is right Ingrid…. the title was going to ‘My Old Highs and Lows’ …. but ‘A Box of Old Crayons’ was far more intriguing… ππ

Thank you V.J. and sorry I’ve not visited much lately, this doing a ‘Book’ thing has been a time consuming new experience for me… exciting, but very tiring for this old poet. π

I love this beautiful, relatable poem! Keep coloring our world with your beautiful poems, Ivor!
When my son was little, he had anger issues, not surprising from the early neglect and abuse he had suffered. We bought him an inflatable Popeye punching bag. Every time you punched Popeye, he bounced back again. When life gives you a punch, Ivor, you just bounce back. β€ β€ β€ I admire that.

Thank you Cheryl and yes here I’m metaphorically using “a box of old crayons” as a happy image of recovery/bouncing back from life’s many set-backs… ‘staring at the empty table’… turning the power back on/another swansong…. are words about recovering from grieving and my strokes… life is a full of winding rivers and turbulent seas, those highs and lows, that everyone experiences… ππ

Good! I’m so glad you found it!
Aren’t crayons delightful…they do lift one’s spirit. π
This is a beautiful, relatable, wonderful poem, Ivor!
When the things of life overwhelm we must get out the box of crayons and create! π π You are great at this! π

This is the only crayon emoji I could find…

Good morning there, Ivor! π
Your writing helped you with your recoveries, etc., and your writing helps so many of us when we are going through tough times. Thank you! π
Let me know your results! I’ve been worried about you, but I put aside the worry and replaced it with much prayer and meditation for you. I’m so glad you feel a lot betterer today! π
Cooper says dog-kisses are healing so he is sending more to you! πΆ
