One Butterfly (a Rhyming Haiku)

“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” – W.B. Yeats

One Butterfly (a Rhyming Haiku)

One white butterfly

Quietly fluttered nearby

Breathless! I said Hi

“Song Of Wandering Aengus” A poem by W B Yeats

I went out to the hazel wood
Because a fire was in my head
And cut and peeled a hazel wand
And hooked a berry to a thread.

And when white moths were on the wing
And moth-like stars were flickering out
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the ground
I went to blow the fire a-flame
But something rustled on the floor
And some one called me by my name.

It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands
I will find out where she has gone
And kiss her lips and take her hands.

And walk among long dappled grass
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon
The golden apples of the sun
The silver apples of the moon
The golden apples of the sun.

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  2. Unconventional, but a lovely poem and photo, Ivor! ❤

I read the Yeats poem a couple of times. I didn't understand the poem when I read it in school. Now, I get it on an emotional level, though the poem is dreamlike and has mysterious metaphors. It is a beautiful poem. Thank you for posting it!
