Throwback Friday, Beyond Sunset

I found this poem that I first posted in February 2018. I hope you enjoy the re-run, and as is my way, I’ve made a few edits.

Beyond Sunset (Revised)

Gently, the dying moonlight awakens my dawn
And the baptizing sunrise waters my eyes
Drowning the silent hours of my shallow day
And dimming my hopes of playing in the hay

A hazy dusk shrouds the cemetery lawn
And the rituals of sunset beckon my evening plight
Flailing and falling upon sleepless night
And I lie prone under my weighted crown

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  1. OH, Ivor! So powerful, so poignant! Vivid word-pics and strong emotions!
This posting touches my heart deeply…photo, poem and song/vid. I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes.
Sometimes we know we need to let go, and yet we can’t. The pain of loss and separation is too deep. The painful memories so difficult to set aside. Yet we can continue to hope for healing and new beginnings as we focus on the good, happy memories.
I read that James Bay wrote that song after the loss of a family member to cancer.
Often nature, especially the daily sunrise and sunset remind me of those I love who have passed on. But, I, also, find comfort in the sunset time of the night and in the big beautiful glowing moon. πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you for your very kind words, Carolyn … It’s 7 years since I originally wrote this one, and these days I have learnt to cope with emotions that roll through our souls when least expected … I only recently came across this James Bay song, and it’ was such a suitable tune for my poem … πŸ’™πŸ’œπŸ’•πŸ˜πŸŽ΅πŸŒπŸΆ
