“The Last Chicane” is a poem I wrote in October 2019, and this morning I reworded several lines …

The Last Chicane (Revised)
I have been climbing every rung
Even the broken ones unsung
I have played every sad song
Even when the words were wrong
I saw my bird fly away
Even though her nest stays here today
I have praised my swan’s eternal fight
Even through her turbulent flights
I am listening to the bells chiming
Even above lyrics that are not rhyming
I am beginning to flutter my wings again
Even after missing the last chicane
I am preparing for the next equestrian
Even though I am a lost pedestrian
Ivor Steven (c) September 2022

I love this…
I saw my bird fly away
Even though her nest stays here today
I have praised my swan’s eternal fight
Even through her turbulent flights

I am often lost too, Ivor. But I think I’ve found my way home. For now.

I think we get lost at some stage during our journeys Claudia … to find the path “home” is our goal …
“ I move with the leaves
I shine with the chrome
I’m almost alive
I’m almost at home
No one to follow
And nothing to teach
Except that the goal
Falls short of the reach” … Leonard Cohen, lyrics from his song “The Goal”

This is so relatable…so beautiful…it touches my heart.
And pairs perfectly with that Sia song.
Yes, we can fly like a bird if we want to, so we must try.❤️
The Book Bird looks like a lovely place.

I like the conclusion of the poem the best, the lines about the preparation to be an equestrian, even though one is just a pedestrian. In that, we see the stretch of hope like an elastic band snapping back on one’s head as we reach too far in a task we set to accomplish according to one whim or another. It is a sentiment we all can relate to.

Longing to hold the one you’ve loved and lost again, but, you still have things left unfinished here, so, you wait, knowing that you will be together again, one day, in your, future.
