I received some special news during the week
A thing that happens to most books and their authors
But for this old poet the occurrence has extra significance
My wonderful editor/publisher, Judy
Deposited my books, Tullawalla and Perceptions
With the Australian National Library, for archiving
The books and me (Ivor Steven) as the author
Are now forever a part of Australiaβs Artistic history
Not bad for the descendant of a convict
Yessiree!
I can almost hear them cheering and clapping

Congratulations Ivor.
So, you’re part English – I wonder what the convict did to deserve his expulsion?

Apparently he was a pick-pocket β¦ ππ€π

Maybe that’s who Dickens based his characters on in the Oliver Twist book! π
I hope he found a good life waiting for him in Australia, as did another of Dicken’s characters, Magwitch in Great Expectations!
There’s a poem waiting somewhere in your story – rags to riches! π

Thank you Sue β¦ he was released from Port Arthur after 15 years, got married, lived in Wynyard, had 10 kids, and here I am π€πππ

Wow! Such a story.
When was he sent there, what year?
15 years is outrageous.

I think 1834, he was in his 40βs when he got out β¦ Port Arthur was an awful place, to live through that was a feat in itselfβ¦ π€ππ

So interesting, Ivor. I canβt even imagine how horrific these places were, and for many the crimes were petty, and were committed because they were too poor to eat.

Sadly, it was how the English enlisted slave labour to build the colonies π€π
