To Find a Higher Gear

To Find a Higher Gear

Disabled and discarded
Demoted to the outback paddock

My dimpled shell is flaky and sun-burnt
and masks a cracked and dormant engine block

Vanquished wheels are deflated and threadbare
and my rusty axles are twisted and brittle

Hardly strong enough
to carry my dilapidated body

The new year is nearly here
Am I worth restoring?
Am I able to find a higher gear?

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  1. your analogy to the aging body is such a classic poem here Ivor. Though the shell may be worn, the mind is as sharp as a sword! We can’t delay the process but hopefully the journey to the outback paddock will be one filled with joy and laughter. Welcome to 2025 and wishing you a lovely year ahead my friend.
