Bold and Defiant

Bold and Defiant

On a fold of cold dirt
Between the concrete path
And its plastic edging
A small tomato seedling
Decided this was the spot to sprout

The plant has defied the odds
It’s winter, the ground is cold
And there is no plausible reason
For a seed to germinate, there

Well, I thought to myself
“You’ve come this far, so best
I give you a helping hand”

Carefully, I extracted the tiny plant
From the slim sliver of earth
And replanted the little fella
Into my sunny and secure planter box

Hopefully, the bold bush will survive
The wearisome winter season
And maybe I’ll have some tomatoes
For the Christmas dinner table

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

    1. We all need a helping hand … the position of my planter box is a sheltered one and I’ve a feeling it will do ok, despite being way out of season πŸͺ΄πŸ˜ŠπŸŒ

    1. Thank you kindly, Dale … let’s hope winter is not too harsh … my planter box is in a sheltered spot, hope the out of season tomato will survive πŸͺ΄πŸŒπŸ˜

  1. AW! So sweet! Thank you for recognizing the boldness and defiance of this tomato seedling! (Have you given him/her a name yet?)
Your tender-loving-care is much applauded and appreciated, Ivor! πŸ™‚
I hope for, and wish for, surviving, thriving, flourishing and tomatoes for Christmas! πŸ™‚
We only planted tomatoes, squash, and more flowers this summer. (We kept the veggie garden smaller than last year.) So far everything is thriving! Each day when we go visit, bringing them a cool drink of water, they look inches taller than the day before! πŸ™‚

    1. Theo the Tomato Tree is his name … early days, but after some nutritional rain and a bit of winter sunshine today, the little tomato bushes has taken a good grip in my planter box, and Theo looks very healthy tonight, after his transplant from 2 days ago … πŸ˜πŸ’•πŸŒΌπŸŒπŸŒžπŸΆ
