A rondeau is a fixed-form poem that originated in French lyrical poetry. It typically consists of 15 lines, divided into three stanzas (a quintet, a quatrain, and a sestet), with a refrain and a specific rhyme scheme. Here’s a simple guide to help you craft one:
Structure of a Rondeau.
- Lines: 15 lines in total.
- Stanzas:
- First stanza: 5 lines (quintet)
- Second stanza: 4 lines (quatrain)
- Third stanza: 6 lines (sestet)
- Refrain: The first few words or the opening phrase of the first line are repeated as the last line of the second and third stanzas.
- Rhyme Scheme: AABBA AABR AABBAR (where “R” is the refrain).

Such an perfect post! A powerful heart-touching poem, Ivor. And your poem is so lovely resting between your sky photo and that Tom O’Dell song. 🙂 ❤️ Mr. O’Dell’s songs often take us on emotional journeys…encouraging us to be resilient…let go of pain and find healing. 🙂
(((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️

Yes … Tom O’Del’s song is quite lovely and positive, Carolyn … I often look at that old weary tree which is so full character and I’ve used the tree in many of my poems 😍🤗🌏🎶🐶📖
