An Old Plumber, An Ex-Carer, An Amateur Poet, Words From The Heart
Drifting Bassinets
Drifting Bassinets
On my knees, by the sea Looking beyond our sentinel trees I hear their whistling palms Forlornly echoing abandoned alarms
Through their leaves’ silhouettes I see a becalmed ocean of wavelets Caressing a boat full of suffragettes Fleeing the dusty sky of Mariupol sunsets Clutching their war-torn bassinets
G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer.
I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

Thank you very much for lovely words, Sadje … I’m afraid this one took me all day to do … the rhythm and the words just wouldn’t gel for me, midnight crept up on me and this is the final tired post, now it’s after 1.00 am and it’s time for me get to sleep 😊🌏😴
Thank you very much, and in this poem the rhyming format proved to be a difficult one for me … taking the word ‘suffragette’ away from its traditional meaning was one I wasn’t sure about … however, poetically the social inference I was trying create, seemed ok
Perfect photo to go with your poem! Powerful, important, heart-touching poem, Ivor! One of your very best! Powerful, emotional video/song for your poem.
(Pass the tissues, please.)
The plight of refugees has always been horrifying to me, and the indifference some people have toward them, and toward their hardship and suffering, is so heart-breaking. 😦 We need many more people to care, be understanding, empathetic, be selfless, share, give, help. We need people to look beyond the headlines, and focus on the individual people, and families, who are in crisis.
(((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️
Yes, yes, to all of your thoughtful comments, Carolyn … people seem to forget that we all refugees when we were born, a new born in a new land, crying out for someone to take care of us 😍😊🌏📖💕🎶🐶
The idea of ‘drifting basinets’ seemed dreamy and bucolic; then, when I read the name Mariupol, the image changed to something a bit darker …. especially after reading the basinets were changed to ‘war-torn’. Quite a picture you have painted for us, dear Ivor …. something to contemplate. Perfect song as well. 🎶 ♡
Thank you for your wonderful summation of my poem, Nancy … this is the one I had so much trouble with … I had a nice idea, but I couldn’t put it into words… the 9 lines took me 9 hours to write and get right 📖😍😊🌏
Beautiful my friend!

The visual of the line ‘war-torn bassinettes- is so grim. I love this form though where all the ending words rhyme.

Yes, exactly! A great way to say express that…and I wish people would connect with that and be more compassionate.

I’m afraid Trump’s attitude towards immigrants and refugees is not helping the situation, Carolyn
