Shangri La, Volume 21, Beyond the Midday Moon

FREE PDF COPY >>> Links Below

Hello, dear readers and followers. As you may know, I stopped producing my “Tullawalla Booklets” at #31 because that was the house number of our family’s Tullawalla Homestead.
Yet the booklet format is a superb way for me to catalogue the vast number of poems I produce, and as the saying goes, “I Am Turning Another Page”. Here I have begun a new series of poem booklets, called “Shangri La”, the name of my little Villa, and it is my piece of “earthly paradise, a retreat from the pressures of modern civilization”.
I now have “2407” poems gathered across these booklets
(On my bookshelf, sits “The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, with 1775 poems — when I first began writing, I never imagined I would one day surpass that number.)

“Like all my booklets, this one is here to be read at your leisure — no rush, no expectation, just an open page waiting when you are.”

Beyond the Midday Moon

The midday moon
is less than 10° above the horizon —
low enough
for my weary wings
to fly over.

The morning clouds are dispersing,
and up here, above the moon,
my shadows are free
to echo my dreams.

Between the sky and the moon,
I gaze into their shared light —
sometimes life is out of sight,
other times everything is alright,
either way, they welcome
my unspoken words,
whether day or night.

A song that drifts in the same strange daylight as the poem — a quiet companion to the light above us.

Life’s Missing Teacher

I never found a teacher,
who taught me how to grieve.

The unforeseen creature
was difficult to perceive.

After unplugging her extension cord,
time was always near.

While wandering toward
the edge of life’s weathered pier.

In the spaces grief never taught me to navigate, Cohen’s song becomes a guide.

Leftover Heirlooms

I’m roaming around
the inner zone of Shadowland,
the heart of twilight’s middle ground.

Inquiringly peering down
upon the sun’s retiring nightgown.

Above her hessian costume,
the fading crescent moon
is also descending into the world’s bedroom.

Again, I am an abandoned groom
from life’s fragmented honeymoon,
here clutching nostalgia’s leftover heirlooms.

Here, at the water’s edge, we let the last of the day slip quietly from our hands.

Between Here and the Edge

I’m no ancient mariner
with a sextant to chart the sky
The moon was falling into bed,
the sun rising ahead,
both at the same height,
as if I were the hinge between them.

Here I stand on their earthbound bridge
at the centre of my own universe,
unsure of my footing near the edge –
am I fading into the advancing ground,
or drifting back toward an old wedding pledge.

Home Away From Home

.

On an island under the northern stars
Among the giant evergreen cedars
Within my personal astrodome
Feeling at ease in my home away from home

I am on top of the world
Uncurling my ancient bones, yet unfurled
Giving my weary soul another joyful whirl

In a land covered by forests and berries
Living a dream on an island with magical fairies

Purple Tomato Trees

I have hallucinations of Vikings sailing in the cold
Plundering forgotten hearts and pilfering gold

I am dreaming of the old farmer’s wife
Milking cows and baking all her life

I have feelings for the king, in his isolated castle
Looking forlornly upon his drawbridge, a foodless trestle

I am wandering through an empty paddock
Kicking dew off the grass, searching for a lover’s locket

I have plans for the planet’s desolate future
Growing purple tomato trees until they are mature

I remember her bravery, her everlasting smile
Fading gradually, in her own gracious style

I have ceased stumbling under her distant sky
Now claiming peace among today’s butterflies

Below My Crown

Deep into the Twilight Zone
At that moment above the horizon
When the sun is sliding down
Underneath his eiderdown

Nature dons her noble crown
And declares to everyone in town
“There’s no need to be a sad clown
or wear a worried frown.
Take your time to have a look around,
the world is not falling down”

Resuming the Climb

From beyond the grand universe of mime
The eternal wings of time
Embraced the muse of my rhymes
Rewinding my heartstrings’ chime

Words cascade onto my blue lines
And valiantly my soul resumes the climb

Serene Memories

I live in a time zone
Where a peaceful river flows
Through the heart of my home

Down the road, toward the South
The Ocean’s shimmering memories
Convey a tranquil taste
Of sea mist to my mouth

And not far away, toward the North
The mountain’s eucalyptus fragrance
Serenely follows me back and forth
