It’s a hot 103’F here in Geelong this afternoon, so appropriately my Throwback Friday poem “The Oven Sky”, from February 2019, is my repost for today.
The Oven Sky
The summer flowers have faded and gone
Wilting leaves, look like the devils blight
My Calendar declares Autumn is almost here
But it’s still summer in the city
Remaining hot and dusty, here on my plot
All the dogs are panting, searching for a cool block
Singed birds have refused to fly in the oven sky
Today’s furnace, is the night’s unwanted heater
Dry rot is crumbling, under the burning sun
Fat rain drops have forgotten their landing spots
And the drought smiles at us with disdain
As we gasp and forlornly wait for a cool change

it’s starting to warm up a little here too Ivor, we finally have a day of sun after so many rainy ones. Is somehow cannot imagine Geelong warm and dry, it will always be rainy and windy in my heart and mind. Stay in the shade Ivor. ” Today’s furnace, is the night’s unwanted heater” this was a brilliant line,

It rarely gets above 95 degrees here. But we have hurricanes. No place is perfect, I guess! Stay cool, Ivor! ❤ ❤ ❤ Love the poem!

Ivor, sending you some cool wind from the Pacific NW. I really like this line, “Singed birds have refused to fly in the oven sky.”

How wonderful Ivor! Evocative. It is winter here now in inland Southern California. We are impressed to see the nightime temp hit 29F. In summer it will be hotter here than where you are. I love your poem and the ‘singed birds in the oven sky’. In the summer desert near here, when it get above 115, ravens still fly, but they pant like dogs on the wing. Take care my friend.

Nice throwback, Ivor. Your weather is far too hot and I hope it cools down for everyone to a more moderate degree.

I can’t possibly imagine an oven sky right now: been living in a freezer since round about September 🥶
