Throwback Friday, The Oven Sky, by Ivor Steven

Copied from my article on “Go Dog Go Cafe” today >> https://godoggocafe.com/2023/02/17/throwback-friday-the-oven-sky-by-ivor-steven/

It’s a hot 103’F here in Geelong this afternoon, so appropriately my Throwback Friday poem “The Oven Sky”, from February 2019, is my repost for today.

The Oven Sky

The summer flowers have faded and gone

Wilting leaves, look like the devils blight

My Calendar declares Autumn is almost here

But it’s still summer in the city

Remaining hot and dusty, here on my plot

All the dogs are panting, searching for a cool block

Singed birds have refused to fly in the oven sky

Today’s furnace, is the night’s unwanted heater

Dry rot is crumbling, under the burning sun

Fat rain drops have forgotten their landing spots

And the drought smiles at us with disdain

As we gasp and forlornly wait for a cool change

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  1. it’s starting to warm up a little here too Ivor, we finally have a day of sun after so many rainy ones. Is somehow cannot imagine Geelong warm and dry, it will always be rainy and windy in my heart and mind. Stay in the shade Ivor. ” Today’s furnace, is the night’s unwanted heater” this was a brilliant line,

  2. How wonderful Ivor! Evocative. It is winter here now in inland Southern California. We are impressed to see the nightime temp hit 29F. In summer it will be hotter here than where you are. I love your poem and the ‘singed birds in the oven sky’. In the summer desert near here, when it get above 115, ravens still fly, but they pant like dogs on the wing. Take care my friend.
