Shangri La, Volume 20, Life’s Missing Teacher

Hello, dear readers and followers. As you may know, I stopped producing my โ€œTullawalla Bookletsโ€ at #31 because that was the house number of our familyโ€™s Tullawalla Homestead.
Yet the booklet format is a superb way for me to catalogue the vast number of poems I produce, and as the saying goes, โ€œI Am Turning Another Pageโ€. Here I have begun a new series of poem booklets, called โ€œShangri Laโ€, the name of my little Villa, and it is my piece of โ€œearthly paradise, a retreat from the pressures of modern civilizationโ€.
I now have โ€œ2354โ€ poems gathered across these booklets
(On my bookshelf, sits โ€œThe Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, with 1775 poems โ€” when I first began writing, I never imagined I would one day surpass that number.)

โ€œLike all my booklets, this one is here to be read at your leisure โ€” no rush, no expectation, just an open page waiting when you are.โ€

Lifeโ€™s Missing Teacher

I never found a teacher,
who taught me how to grieve.

The unforeseen creature
was difficult to perceive.

After unplugging her extension cord,
time was always near.

While wandering toward
the edge of lifeโ€™s weathered pier.

In the spaces grief never taught me to navigate, Cohenโ€™s song becomes a guide.

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  1. Exactly what Nancy said. I can understand your grief, having lost a spouse but I cannot know how you grieve. This was an interesting Cohen piece. I was unfamiliar with it.

  2. Yes, you are so right, grief is very personal…and that is the way it should be. How to do it, cannot be taught. But together we can help each other, experience some comfort, and feel less alone. โค๏ธ
Mr. Cohen…his voice, his words…has always been a help and guide to me. โค๏ธ

    1. Ah, yes my article is all about โ€œShangri La Volume 20โ€ which title happens to be โ€œLifeโ€™s Missing Teacherโ€ โ€ฆ most readers seem to be commenting on the poem and not the actual booklet itself, which is now the 51st booklet of the two seriesโ€ฆ (((HUG))) ๐Ÿ“˜๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ“˜๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ“˜

  3. Such a beautiful poem.
Congratulations, Ivor, so many poems written and published. Itโ€™s a good feeling to look back on the many achievements that were once simply imagined. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thank you very much for your kind words, Sue … and it all started as a bit of self-help therapy so I could read and write again … ‘from little things, big things grow’ … ๐Ÿ“ƒ๐Ÿ“˜๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ˜Š

  4. That’s an impressive number of poems, Ivor. I understand grief, as well, from past experiences. In fact, yesterday Spillwords published my poem about grief, which I will share later. Thank you for sharing your booklets. ๐Ÿ’œโ˜ฎ๏ธ๐Ÿช„
