Learning to Fly (a Senryu)

A lone bird rising into the morning sky reminds us that every flight begins the same way β€” meeting the wind, opening our wings, and trusting the air to hold us.

Learning to Fly (a Senryu)

How to fly away
Face the wind and spread your wings
Leap and trust yourself

And sometimes, in the lift between fear and hope, we discover the wings we didn’t know we had.

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  1. This speaks to something deep, Ivor. You’re not just talking about birds here; you’re talking about all of us, aren’t you?

How we learn to fly by facing what scares us, by spreading ourselves open, and then by taking the leap. And in that moment between knowing we might fall and trusting we might soar, we find out who we really are. The senryu form is perfect for this so direct, so true. Beautiful work.
